Drop-offs and tears: Our 5 favorite picture books to help soothe separation anxiety

Writer's picture: Laura SenenkoLaura Senenko

Heading off to preschool is an exciting time of exploration and independence! But if your child's eyes well up and their dimpled hands grab your legs in a death grip at drop-off time, know that your little one isn't purposefully trying to ruin your morning. He or she is experiencing an uncomfortable – even painful – transition from their beloved adult to a room full of new people. Fortunately, there are wonderful books that help prepare your child and ease their (and your!) anxiety. Five of our favorites:

The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn

Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney

Owl Babies by Martin Waddel and Patrick Benson

The Invisible String by Patrice Karst and Geoff Stevenson

I Love You All Day Long by Francesca Rusackas
